Mentor profile:
Hello, my name is Craig Stroup and I am a First Officer with America West Airlines based in Phoenix on the Airbus 319/320 for the last 3 years. Prior to America West I was employed with American Airlines as a result of the merger with Trans World Airlines (TWA). I was flying the Boeing 717 based in St. Louis. I have learned much the airline industry and the realities of being furloughed. My experience with the airlines began with Trans States Airlines (Trans World Express) as a Captain and First Officer on the Jetstream 4100. My education background includes an undergraduate degree from Parks College of St. Louis University and nearing completion of a Masterís of Science from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

Favorite thing about flying:
The opportunity to fly an advanced aircraft with a great group of pilots. A schedule that allows me to enjoy blocks of days off with my family and make a relatively good living.
Disadvatages of being a pilot:
Having to commute to my domicile and not being home every night. The uncertainty of the airline business.

What you would have done different:
Not really.
Advice to aspiring pilots:
To set goals and make the sacrifice necessary to achieve these goals. Not to lose sight of the big picture as a result of the bumps in the road along the way!
Problems encounterd along the way:
Understanding the financial burden of flight training costs.
